Urban small-scale food production.
These findings will guide the implementation of small-scale food production.
Urban small-scale food production involving outdoor modular living wall systems (LWSs) with leafy African vegetables (AV) provides a resilient space-saving solution in compact urban environments as an alternative to conventional soil-based agriculture. I aim to study how edible green infrastructure with AV can contribute to specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets in underprivileged South African communities. These SDGs include poverty (SDG1), food security (SDG2), human well-being (SDG3), sustainable cities (SDG11), responsible consumption and production (SDG12), and climate action (SDG13).
The first goal is to understand South African communities' experiences and viewpoints on the opportunities and challenges of growing AV in LWSs for food production. The second goal is to measure the extent of the contribution of AV in LWSs to the above SDG targets. These findings will guide the implementation of small-scale food production projects at community facilities, schools and early childhood development centres in underprivileged communities.
